The report, "Human Rights & Gender Review of Gender-Based Violence Related Laws in the Maldives," offers a comprehensive analysis of the legal landscape concerning gender-based violence (GBV) in the Maldives. It dives into the intricate relationship between the nation's commitment to human rights and the practical challenges in upholding these rights, especially regarding gender equality and the prevention of GBV. The report also examines the Maldives' progress and ongoing challenges in aligning its national legal frameworks with international obligations, such as the Convention on the Elimination of Discrimination Against Women (CEDAW).

Maldives has made significant advances in aligning the country’s national legal and regulatory framework with international obligations, including concluding observations and treaty body recommendations. However, a lot remains to be done and having a clear overview of laws and policies is just a first step to prevent inequalities and continuation of intergenerational violence. This study, initiated by the UNFPA Maldives, is a critical step towards understanding and rectifying the gaps and contradictions in the current laws related to GBV, paving the way for more effective protection and empowerment of women and girls in the Maldives.
