Male’, Maldives, 28 February 2024 – The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) calls for innovative and local strategies to address the unique challenges posed by demographic shifts in the Maldives, emphasising the critical need to support Maldivian women, girls, and youth.
During a three-day visit, UNFPA Regional Director for Asia and the Pacific, Mr. Pio Smith, highlighted the Maldives' distinctive challenges as a Small Island Developing State (SIDS), including geographical dispersion and isolation, which complicate the delivery of essential reproductive health services. “In facing these challenges, our focus is on ensuring accessible knowledge and services for a healthy future, especially for women, girls, and young people,” Mr. Smith stated.
With the Maldives experiencing low fertility rates and an ageing population, similar to trends in other SIDS and Asian countries, there is a pressing need for innovative social and economic policies. The 2022 census data indicates a decrease in the working-age population against a rising elderly demographic, prompting a reevaluation of policies to support sustainable development across all generations.

UNFPA is spearheading efforts to empower the youth, crucial for the country’s future. Initiatives are aimed at providing comprehensive reproductive health services and equipping young Maldivians with essential life skills, preparing them for the workforce and adulthood. “Empowering young people extends beyond education; it’s about amplifying their voices and realising their potential,” added Mr. Smith.
UNFPA underscores the importance of integrating life-skills based education into national programmes to ensure young individuals are well-prepared for life's challenges beyond academic achievements. This approach is part of UNFPA’s broader strategy to invest in the youth, fostering a future of healthy and dignified ageing.
